A heat recovery steam generator (HRSG) is a type of boiler with water tubes placed in the flue of
a gas turbine or other heat source to utilize the waste heat for making steam. Usually the steam
drives a steam turbine and both turbines drive electric generators. This is known as a combined
cycle power plant.
A boiler is a closed vessel in which water or other fluid is heated under pressure. The steam or hot
fluid is then circulated out of the boiler for use in various process or heating applications. A safety
valve is required to prevent over pressurisation and possible explosion of a boiler.
In a combined cycle power plant, or combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) plant, a gas turbine
generator is combined with a steam turbine generator with the objective to increase the efficiency of
electricity generation.
In a thermal power plant, high-temperature heat as input to the power plant, usually from burning of
fuel, is converted to electricity as one of the outputs and low-temperature heat as another output.
